"The aim of the Eco-‐Pesa programme was to promote and facilitate environmental social service work and economic development in impoverished informal settlements (slums) through the innovative use of a complementary currency."
"Eco-Pesa : an evaluation of a complementary currunecy programme in Kenya’s informal settlements",
William O. Ruddick, International Journal Of Community Currency Research 2011 Volume 15(A)1-12
Eco-Pesa is a local currency in Kongowea Kenya. It can be obtained through micro-finance loans, as payment for local goods and services and through community events that support environmental conservation like waste collection days.
The Eco-Pesa could then be used to purchase goods and services in the community, where it continues to circulate - helping the community, environment and economy.
